After 18 years of unanswered questions, investigators in Portugal have confirmed they received an anonymous letter pinpointing what the sender claimed to be the burial site of Madeleine McCann — the British girl who vanished in 2007 from a holiday resort in Praia da Luz.
Police sources told reporters that the letter, written in English and mailed from within Portugal, arrived at the national criminal investigation office two weeks ago. It contained GPS coordinates and a chilling message: “She never left this ground.”
Upon excavating the site — a secluded clearing near an abandoned farmhouse less than 30 kilometers from the original resort — officers made what officials described as “a deeply disturbing discovery.”
The area, heavily overgrown and inaccessible by vehicle, contained freshly disturbed earth, and beneath it, forensic teams reportedly uncovered items unmistakably linked to a child. Investigators are remaining tight-lipped, but multiple sources have confirmed that among the evidence was a small piece of pink fabric, consistent with the pajamas Madeleine was last seen wearing, and a metal charm bracelet that matches one described by her mother in early witness statements.
“The excavation is ongoing,” a police spokesperson said late Wednesday. “We are working with British authorities to confirm the origin and authenticity of the items recovered.”
The anonymous sender’s identity is now a top priority for both Portuguese and UK police, who are treating the letter as coming from someone with firsthand knowledge of the case.
Madeleine’s parents have been informed of the discovery. A family representative said they are “devastated but determined to finally learn the truth.”
“After all these years, they’re not ready to give up,” the source said quietly. “But nothing could have prepared them for what was found there.”
Officials have described this as the most significant development in over a decade, and one that could finally bring closure to one of the world’s most haunting mysteries.
