Argentinian footballer Lucas Trejo lost his wife and two children in the earthquake in Venezuela while he was training with his team in Caracas.
Argentinian footballer Lucas Trejo, who plays for Venezuela’s Sport Marítimo La Guaira club, lost his wife and two children in last week’s devastating earthquake – considered the strongest in Venezuela in over a century.

When the two earthquakes struck in quick succession, Trejo, 38, was attending his team’s training camp in the capital, Caracas. He immediately returned to his family home in the coastal city of La Guaira.
For three days, Trejo, along with family, friends, and teammates, relentlessly searched for his wife, Yanina, and their two children, Aarón and Ainhoa, under the rubble. The family also appealed for additional heavy machinery to assist in the rescue effort.
Trejo’s brother-in-law shared, “He is heartbroken. There’s nothing left of the family home.” Upon returning to the scene, Trejo saw only devastation, with no trace of the building where his family lived.
On June 29th, Sport Marítimo La Guaira confirmed that Trejo’s wife and two children had died. In a message of condolence posted on social media, the team expressed “deep sorrow at this irreplaceable loss” and affirmed: “Lucas, you are not alone. The Sport Marítimo La Guaira family is with you.”
The earthquake disaster also claimed the lives of several Venezuelan football players. The Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) confirmed that 18-year-old Yimvert Berroteran, a talented youngster who had participated in the U-17 World Cup in Doha and played for the national U-20 team, was among the victims. Two other young players, Víctor Palacios and Razan Sijaa, also perished.
In another instance, footballer Héctor Bello stated that his partner died while trying to protect their young daughter during the earthquake.
According to Venezuelan officials, the earthquake killed more than 1,400 people and thousands remain missing. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said it was a rare “double earthquake” phenomenon, with two major earthquakes occurring just 39 seconds apart.
Chinese media reported that at least eight Chinese citizens were among the dead. Meanwhile, the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed that at least nine Spanish citizens had died and more than 100 others remained missing.
Rescue efforts have now entered the phase beyond the first 72 hours, considered a “golden opportunity” to find survivors after the earthquake. According to experts, the chances of survival for trapped victims will decrease rapidly after this time, especially if there is no water source.
