But to my shock, someone walked in and put my phone on speaker. The voice that came through revealed a terrifying, secret plan about to unfold at my wedding.

Five minutes.
That’s all I had before I was supposed to walk down the aisle and marry Ethan Hale, the man I believed was the love of my life.

But instead of floating in bridal bliss, I was hiding in the bridal suite bathroom, gripping the edge of the sink and forcing myself to breathe.

It’s just nerves, I told myself.
Every bride gets cold feet.

But deep down, something felt… off.

That’s when the door creaked open.

I jumped. “I—I’m in here!”

No response.

Footsteps approached, soft but purposeful.

A hand slowly pushed the bathroom door open. My maid of honor, Lauren, stepped inside—but her face was pale, tense, nothing like her usual calm.

Before I could ask what was wrong, she lifted my phone and pressed speaker.

“Listen,” she whispered.

At first, there was only static.
Then—voices.

Two men.
Muffled.
Urgent.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“No one can tell her until it’s done,” the first voice said.
“If she finds out beforehand, she’ll run.”

My stomach dropped.

The second man replied, “Everything is set. The moment the officiant says ‘Speak now or forever hold your peace,’ he’ll step in. She’ll never see it coming.”

Lauren shot me a horrified glance.

“Who are they talking about?” I whispered.

She swallowed. “You.”

Before I could process that, the first man spoke again—his voice clearer this time.

“Remember, once the truth is out, Ethan loses everything. That’s the point. She needs to hear it in front of the entire crowd.”

Ethan?
My Ethan?

My throat tightened.

The second man hissed, “I still think this is too risky. What if she doesn’t go through with it?”

The reply was cold:

“Oh, she will. She adores him. She trusts him. That’s why this will destroy her.”

Lauren grabbed my arms. “Do you recognize those voices?”

I nodded slowly… because I did.

The first voice was Ethan’s brother.
The second… Ethan’s best friend.

People he trusted.
People I had welcomed into my life.

“What… what are they planning to do?” I whispered.

Lauren hesitated, then said the words that made my blood turn to ice:

“They’re planning to expose a secret Ethan’s been hiding—something big enough to ruin his entire life. And they want to do it during your wedding… so you break in front of everyone.”

My knees nearly buckled.

“Why would they do that to him?” I gasped.

Lauren looked away.

“Because they think you deserve to know the truth. And because someone very close to you asked them to intervene.”

My mind swirled.

Someone close to me?

“Who?” I whispered.

Lauren reached into her pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper.

“It arrived this morning,” she said softly. “With no signature.”

I unfolded it.

A single line stared back at me:

“Stop the wedding. Or the truth will stop it for you.”

My hands shook violently.

“What truth?” I cried. “What is going on?”

Lauren hesitated, tears filling her eyes.

“Your groom… Ethan… he’s hiding someone. Someone important. Someone he never wanted you to know about.”

I felt my voice break.

“Who?”

Lauren met my gaze.

“His daughter.”

The world stopped.

“He has a child,” she whispered. “A five-year-old. And he never told you.”

I stumbled back, gripping the counter as my vision blurred.

The voices on the phone continued, merciless:

“Once everyone hears the truth,” Ethan’s brother said, “she’ll walk out. And he’ll finally face the consequences.”

Lauren grabbed my trembling hands.

“What do you want to do?” she asked.

Outside the door, music began to play.

My wedding march.

Every second counted.

I looked into the mirror—into the eyes of a woman who was one step away from marrying a man she no longer knew.

And for the first time that day, I felt completely, terrifyingly awake.
