Writer/Producer Taylor Sheridan has been churning out series after series on Paramount+ following the runaway success of Yellowstone, and the newest of these, the oil industry drama Landman, might just be Sheridan’s biggest hit since he began building his little TV empire.

Landman wrapped up its first season in January and was renewed in March, and as of August, the show has officially announced a premiere date for Season 2. Our favorite disheveled West Texas oilman, Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), will be back on our screens before we know it. Which is a good thing, because Tommy has a lot on his plate — french fries and mashed potatoes, you could say — and he’ll surely get even more problems added to his pile when Landman returns. Here’s everything we know so far about Season 2.

Landman Season 2 premiere date

Dust off your cowboy boots — it’s almost time to go back to West Texas. Landman Season 2 will premiere Sunday, Nov. 16 on Paramount+.

The streamer announced the news on Aug. 13 with a short video that teases another stressful day at work for Tommy.

Most of the Season 1 cast is expected to return for Season 2, including:

  • Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a land manager at M-Tex Oil, whose life is one crisis after another
  • Demi Moore as Cami Miller, Tommy’s friend and the widow of his boss, Monty
  • Ali Larter as Angela Norris, Tommy’s ex-wife with whom he’s rekindled a relationship
  • Michelle Randolph as Ainsley Norris, Tommy and Angela’s daughter, who’s supposedly in high school and dreams of marrying an NFL quarterback
  • Jacob Lofland as Cooper Norris, Tommy and Angela’s son, who plans to start his own oil company to provide for Ariana
  • Kayla Wallace as Rebecca Savage, a shark of an attorney who Monty put in charge of M-Tex alongside Tommy
  • James Jordan as Dale Bradley, a petroleum engineer who manages roughnecks and is Tommy’s roommate
  • Paulina Chávez as Ariana Medina, a young widow who is falling in love with Cooper, but it’s too soon after her husband’s death
  • Colm Feore as Nathan, M-Tex’s general counsel and Tommy’s other roommate
  • Mustafa Speaks as Boss, an experienced roughneck
  • Mark Collie as Walt Joeberg, the local sheriff
  • Andy Garcia as Gallino, a high-ranking drug cartel member who wants to do business with Tommy

In the biggest Season 2 casting news, Sam Elliott is joining Landman as a series regular, Paramount+ announced in late April. We don’t know who he’ll be playing yet, but given that it’s Sam Elliott, we’re guessing he won’t be playing some city slicker. It will be an 1883 reunion for Sheridan and Elliott, who played Shea Brennan in the Yellowstone prequel.

Jon Hamm only signed on for one season and will not be returning to Landman. It would be strange if he did, as his character Monty died during open heart surgery. “You don’t come back from that,” Hamm told USA Today. “He’s no longer with us.”

Hamm also hinted that Demi Moore, who didn’t do much in Season 1, will have a much bigger role in Season 2. “It’s pretty cool that Taylor said to (Moore), ‘Trust me, I’m going to take care of you. This will be worth your while.’ To say the least,” Hamm said. “Cami’s got so much room to grow and show who she really is. It’s going to be fascinating to watch.” To back this up, press releases promoting Season 2 have moved Moore up in the cast list just behind Thornton.

Landman Season 2 renewal

After many months in limbo, Landman was finally renewed for Season 2 on March 12, 2025. The first season ended on Jan. 12 with lots of buzz and impressive viewership numbers — the streaming service said the show is its most-watched original to date, a claim backed up by its high placement on the Nielsen streaming chart — so the news was hardly surprising. In fact, the only thing that was surprising was that it took Paramount+ so long to make the call official. The network did not announce any other details, including plot, release date, or cast.

In May 2024, months before Season 1 premiered, Landman star Demi Moore told Deadline that she expected to start filming Season 2 in early 2025. “I’ve already completed the first season and I’m excited for us to start the second which will be at the beginning of next year,” she said. Adding even more speculation was star Ali Larter, who told Elle in January 2025 that a production timeline for Season 2 had already been set. She seemed just as antsy as we were, asking Paramount to “just announce it!”

Landman Season 2 production

The Taylor Sheridan machine never stops, apparently. On April 2, 2025, Paramount+ announced that production on Landman Season 2 had begun, just three weeks after the series was renewed (the wheels have clearly been unofficially in motion on Season 2 for a while). As part of the announcement, Demi Moore received second billing in the cast list behind only Billy Bob Thornton, the titular landman himself — indicating she’ll be more prominent in Season 2. That would make sense, especially as Moore’s popularity is spiking following her Oscar-nominated performance in The Substance.

Where Landman Season 1 left off

The season finale left our Michelob Ultra-swigging, highly imperfect hero Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) in several pickles he’ll have to get out of in Season 2. Following the death of his boss, Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), from a heart attack, Tommy is now the president of M-Tex Oil, a job he did not want. He has to complete negotiations on an exploratory drilling deal Monty was putting together that will bankrupt the company if it doesn’t work out, and he has to do it alongside Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), an attorney he does not trust.

On top of that, he has to deal with the drug cartel that’s moving product across M-Tex’s land. Gallino (Andy Garcia) — Tommy’s new, affably menacing point of contact — wants his new “friend” Tommy to help him get the cartel into the oil business, and managing that not-exactly-consensual relationship will be a huge headache for Tommy.

Plus, Tommy’s (ex)wife Angela (Ali Larter) is high maintenance, his daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) is a handful, and his son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is in a physically and emotionally dangerous relationship with Ariana (Paulina Chávez), the grieving widow of his dead oil field coworker.

Landman source material

Landman is based on a Texas Monthly podcast called Boomtown. Boomtown, which ran for 12 episodes between 2019 and 2020, features in-depth reporting on the oil industry in the Permian Basin, America’s most productive oilfield. Boomtown was named one of the 50 best podcasts of 2020 by The Atlantic.

Boomtown was reported, written, and hosted by journalist Christian Wallace, who is the co-creator of Landman alongside Sheridan. Wallace previously worked as a roughneck and as an editor at Texas Monthly.

He told Deadline that some of Landman is “very accurate” about what it’s like to work in the oil and gas industry, while other elements were embellished for the sake of drama and creating compelling characters. “And it’s funny, it depends on who you ask,” he said. “My uncle who works in the oil field for the last 30 years will nitpick every little thing. But I think for the most part, it’s safe to say you get a decent sense of what it’s like working in oil and gas out there.”
