The Place Nancy Guthrie Was Found Wasn’t Where Investigators Expected — and the Details Emerging From That Location Are Raising New Alarms

Today, the Catalina Foothills Association, a neighborhood group in the area where Guthrie lives, told residents in a letter that authorities were resuming searches in the area immediately.

“I know we all stand together in our collective disbelief and sadness and greatly appreciate your willingness to speak with law enforcement, share camera images and allow searches of your properties,” the president of the association said in the letter.

Investigators returned to the neighborhood near Tucson today. The county sheriff’s department posted on social media that it was restricting access to the road in front of the home to give investigators space. They directed media organizations staked out there to move.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos believes Nancy Guthrie is still alive as the search for her has dragged into its sixth day.

“What I believe is that Nancy was removed from her home against her will, and that we need to find her. That’s what I believe. She’s still alive,” he said this afternoon. “I believe that I have no choice until something shows me, a piece of physical evidence shows me that that’s different.”

He noted that authorities have completed their talks, at least for now, with staff employed at the house.

“I think there was a landscape crew, a pool maintenance crew, naturally the Uber driver, maybe a housekeeper. I think they have pretty much completed that. We’ve talked. They’ve all been very cooperative. They provided certain information that was helpful to us,” he said.

Hobbs said the Arizona Department of Public Safety is working with local law enforcement in Tucson on the Guthrie case. The department is helping with rapid DNA analysis and is prepared to offer more support if needed, she said.

Hobbs added: “My heart is with the Guthrie family.

Callella appeared in a black long-sleeve T-shirt and in leg irons instead of handcuffs. He made the sign of the cross several times and appeared to pray. He was present along with his federal public defender, Adithya Mani.

As the offense took place in Arizona, he waived his rights to process and identity hearings.

The prosecution asked he be held in pre-trial detention, arguing he had an outstanding warrant from 20 years ago. His attorney said the 2006 outstanding warrant likely pertained to a 2007 misdemeanor conviction and suggested Callella wasn’t aware the warrant had not been cleared.

President Donald Trump tonight said the investigation into finding Nancy Guthrie is going “very well.”

“I think we’re doing very well on that regard,” he told reporters on Air Force One. “I think we’re doing very well, very well meaning we have some clues, I think that are very strong, and I think we could have some answers coming up fairly soon.”

He went on to say, “a lot has taken place in the last couple of hours,” but did not provide specifics or details.

The FBI returned to Nancy Guthrie’s home today for more follow-up investigation, although the agency did not specify what it was looking for or if the visit came as a result of new information, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the matter.

Law enforcement officials in Arizona are searching for a vehicle or vehicles that may be connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation, NBC News has learned.

A Circle K spokesperson told NBC News that law enforcement visited one of their stores on Oracle Road in Tucson after “receiving a tip regarding a vehicle of interest, and our team has provided them access to the store’s surveillance video.”

Officials haven’t said if the vehicle or vehicles are definitively connected to any part of the crime, or if that lead has since evaporated.

The new message regarding Nancy Guthrie was an email sent to Tucson TV station KOLD earlier today, three officials briefed on the message told NBC News.

The FBI is working to confirm if the note came from the same sender as the first reported ransom note referencing Guthrie, the sources said. Officials said that could take some time because of technical factors.

The sources stressed it still hasn’t been verified that the first note came from someone who may have taken Guthrie from her home. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department this afternoon said it is aware of a “new message regarding Nancy Guthrie.”

It’s not clear what kind of message it is and if it is connected to previously reported ransom notes.

Investigators are “actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity,” the sheriff’s department said in a post shared on social media.
