Cousin, 10, of Scarlett Faulkner fights for life after deadly car crash kills teenager
Christopher Faulkner remains in a critical condition as communities across Limerick and Tipperary have united to support his family following a deadly car crash
Relatives are holding a vigil for a 10-year-old boy who is fighting for his life following a crash in Co Antrim which has seen a teenager die.
Christopher Faulkner remains in a critical condition as communities across Limerick and Tipperary have united to support his family in the wake of the tragedy.
The youngster is a cousin of Limerick mother Scarlett Faulkner, who passed away earlier this month at CUH following a brutal roadside attack. Her brother Jason Faulkner died just a few days after her funeral.
Emergency crews responded to the incident on the Belfast Road, which happened shortly before 8 am on Sunday, April 26. The collision involved a black Volkswagen Golf and a silver Volkswagen Passat.
The Golf’s driver has subsequently been detained by the PSNI on several driving-related charges, BelfastLive reports.
A teenage passenger in the Passat, identified locally as 16-year-old Callum Hutchinson from Co Tipperary, tragically died at the scene, while Christopher was transported to hospital, where his condition remains critical.
A vigil has been arranged this evening at St Lelia’s Church in Limerick to offer prayers for Christopher’s recovery and for Callum’s soul. A substantial turnout is anticipated to show solidarity with both families and the broader traveller community during this challenging period. The vigil will take place at 6.30pm.
Loved ones of the Faulkner family have taken to social media in their droves, asking for prayers and support following such a tragic accident.
One person described the family as being “just crushed.” She shared: “The Faulkner family are just crushed and broken. Please let Christopher and the other lads involved in this horrific crash survive their injuries, and may the other young lad, Callum, rest in peace. My sincere condolences to this poor family also.”
Another post urged people to pray for the Faulkner family: “Please everybody pray and share this around with everybody, the more prayers the better, he really needs them.”
A third person wrote: “This poor child was involved in that same accident where his friend lost his life and this child is very very sick in hospital so can everyone please keep him in your prayers and share this to any prayer groups or anyone that you think can pray for him his name is Christopher Faulkner may Jesus put his loving arms around him and bring him home safe to his mummy and daddy.”
Christopher was a cousin of Scarlett Faulker, 28, who died after being on life support at Cork University Hospital for three weeks, having suffered catastrophic injuries in an attack on the R494 near Birdhill on March 21. A respected member of a traveller family from Limerick, she was beaten by a group armed with weapons.
A woman and a 16-year-old girl were charged in connection with the serious assault but the motive remains unclear. Gardai are working on several theories regarding the assault, including that Ms Faulkner may have been travelling in a car that was rammed by a group in another vehicle, dragged from her car, and attacked with implements at the side of the road.
Scarlett’s brother Jason passed away two days after being a pallbearer at her funeral in Limerick. His cousin Melissa McCarthy confirmed the devastating news on social media and asked people to pray for the Faulkner family.
“My heart, 2 days after burying your sister Scarlett, your [sic] gone now Jason, her lovely brother. The laughs we had, oh Jason what are the family gonna do? I can’t get my head round it, no doubt Scarlett Faulkner was there to meet you – together again forever,” said Melissa. “Please keep my aunt Mary and Banny and family in yere [sic] prayers.”
