“My son, if there is another life, I hope you will still be my son.”
Those were the chilling final words 12-year-old Nico Antic sent to his mother after surviving a brutal shark attack in Sydney Harbour — and now, his family has revealed what the boy described about that terrifying day in his own voice.
And what he said… still keeps her awake at night.
“HE THOUGHT HE WAS SAYING GOODBYE”
According to Nico’s mother, the message arrived while doctors were still fighting to stabilize her son after he was pulled from the water with life-threatening injuries.
“I didn’t understand at first why he wrote it like that,” she said. “Then I realized… he believed he might not make it.”
Sources close to the family say Nico, weak and frightened, asked to send one message before being taken for emergency treatment — and chose words that sounded more like a farewell than a text.
NICO’S OWN WORDS ABOUT THE ATTACK
What haunts his mother most is what Nico later told her about the moment it happened.
“He said the water suddenly went dark,” she recalled. “He said he felt something grab him and pull him under.”
Nico reportedly told her he thought it was “the end” — and that he remembered thinking about his family before he lost strength.
“He said he just wanted me to know he loved me,” she whispered.
A NATION HELD ITS BREATH
The shark attack sent shockwaves across Australia, with emergency crews rushing Nico to hospital as stunned beachgoers watched in horror.
Doctors described his condition as “critical but stable,” while social media flooded with prayers for the young soccer-loving boy whose summer swim turned into a fight for survival.
For days, Sydney held its breath.
THE MESSAGE THAT BROKE HER HEART
But it was not the attack itself that devastated Nico’s mother the most — it was his message.
“If there is another life…”
“I keep reading it,” she admitted. “It sounds like he was already thinking about dying.”
She says she now understands her son believed he needed to prepare her for the worst.
“No mother should ever read something like that from her child.”
RECOVERY… BUT THE TRAUMA REMAINS
Though Nico survived, his family says the emotional scars may never heal.
“He doesn’t like to talk about the ocean now,” a relative revealed. “And his mother can’t stop hearing his words in her head.”
The boy continues rehabilitation as his family shields him from cameras and reporters.
But the sentence he wrote — in fear, pain, and love — has already become one of the most heartbreaking details of the entire case.
“I WOULD CHOOSE HIM AGAIN IN EVERY LIFE”
Now, his mother says she has only one answer to the message her son sent.
“If there is another life,” she said through tears, “I would choose him again. Every single time.”
And she hopes the world never forgets the cost of one moment in the water — and the words of a child who thought he might not survive it.
