The sensational claims regarding a highly sophisticated “manipulation plot” or the arrest of “six suspects consisting of five men and three women” are entirely fabricated by online engagement-farming networks. The official investigation conclusions released by the Civil Police of Brazil reflect a reality that is far more sobering and tragic: a case of catastrophic operational negligence.
The incident occurred at the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge), an abandoned railway structure located in Limeira, roughly 148 kilometers north of São Paulo. The victim was twenty-one-year-old physical education student Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas.
According to the official investigation led by Civil Police Delegate Andrea Levy, there was no criminal scheme or psychological manipulation involved. Maria Eduarda voluntarily visited the site to participate in a commercial rope jump excursion organized by an adventure sports crew named “Entre Cordas.”
The tragedy unfolded when Maria requested an “airplane-style” launch, a maneuver where two instructors hoist the participant onto their shoulders to throw them outward, allowing them to spread their arms wide during the freefall. Video footage captured by onlookers shows the two instructors carrying out the launch. However, within seconds, the crowd began screaming in horror as they realized the critical flaw.
Forensic teams confirmed that Maria Eduarda plummeted forty meters directly to the ground and died instantly because she was launched into the abyss without being attached to the safety lines. The heavy climbing ropes had been left completely unattached to her body harness, coiled on the bridge deck. When interrogated by homicide detectives, the crew members admitted to a total breakdown in operational communication, stating they could not remember who was supposed to secure the locking mechanisms or who was responsible for the final safety checklist. Ironically, while the staff members were fully geared and tethered to the bridge structures for their own protection, they threw their customer over the edge with zero physical connection to the platform.
Contrary to the viral social media rumors alleging six or eight arrests of mixed genders, the Civil Police arrested exactly three men—the operators directly managing the platform that day. They have been charged under Brazilian law with homicide with implied malice (homicídio com dolo eventual), a legal designation used when individuals actively assume a high risk that clearly endangers human life.
The disaster has ignited widespread public fury across Brazil regarding the lack of federal and municipal oversight in the adventure tourism sector. In response to the tragedy, the municipal government of Limeira announced legal action against federal authorities for leaving the abandoned bridge unmonitored and unbarricaded for years, which allowed unpermitted private sports companies to run high-risk operations without strict safety oversight.
